This Day in Baseball History
1950 - Yankees pitcher Vic Raschi struggles with new rule and balks four times in one game
Vic Raschi was a four-time All-Star and six-time World Series champion but on May 3, 1950, he had a little trouble adjusting to a new rule.
Now required to make a one-second stop with runners on base, Raschi set an American League record by balking four times in a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Despite the repeated blunder, the right-hander did figure it out and picked up the win, allowing one earned run off 10 hits while striking out eight in a complete game.
1999 - Red Sox rookie Creighton Gubanich blasts grand slam for first major-league hit
Creighton Gubanich's major-league career may have lasted only 18 games but his first hit put him in the record books.
After going 0-for-3 against the Tigers, Gibanich redeemed himself on a trip to Oakland. With the bases loaded in the first inning against the Athletics, the 27-year-old dug in to face Jimmy Haynes and cleared the bases with his shot over the wall in center field.
The home run would be the only one of Gubanich's career.
