Report: Kendrys Morales declined $30-million, 3-year contract with Mariners
Kendrys Morales is still out of a job and the Mariners are still not hitting baseballs this season.
According to a report from The News Tribune, multiple attempts to re-sign the designated hitter were unsuccessful, including a three-year deal worth $30 million made to Morales last summer. The Mariners moved on - acquiring Logan Morrison and singing free agent Corey Hart.
Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik fielded questions at the end of a meet-and-greet with season-ticket holders on opening night at Safeco Field. He was asked about Morales and said the Mariners had offered him a three-year, $30 million contract, which was declined. The offer was made during last season after the All-Star break.
The Mariners then made Morales a one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer after the season, which he also rejected.
Thirteen players were made qualifying offers this off-season, and all offers were rejected. Morales and Red Sox's Stephen Drew are still unemployed, while Ervin Santana fielded a last-minute offer from the Atlanta Braves at virtually the same price as his previously-declined qualifying offer.
Morales, 30, hit 23 home runs and had a .785 OPS during 2013 for the Mariners. Neither Morrison nor Hart have been major offensive assets to the club in the early weeks of the 2014 season.
