Barry Zito taking time off, not retiring
The San Francisco Giants declined an option on pitcher Barry Zito, effectively releasing him from the organization. Zito was not actively looking for a job in baseball during the offseason Jon Heyman reports.
Zito will reportedly take 2014 off for a "reboot". At the age of 36, taking a season off does not necessarily mean he cannot make a comeback.
In 30 games last season, Zito pitched 133 and 1/3 innings, allowing 173 hits and 85 earned runs. Zito had an ERA of 5.74. Through 14 seasons, Zito has a record of 165-143 through 430 games.
