Cubs, Barney agree to one-year, $2.3-million deal avoiding arbitration

The Chicago Cubs and former Gold Glove winning second baseman Darwin Barney agreed to a deal Thursday avoiding arbitration. 

Barney struggled at the plate in his third full season batting .208/.266/.303 with seven home runs and 44 RBI in 141 games. The 28-year-old, who earned $562,000 last season, has seen his average and on base percentage drop significantly since 2011.

Barney was reportedly seeking $2.8 million while the Cubs offered $1.8 million.
