Sandy Alcantara throws a 93-pitch complete-game shutout as Marlins rout White Sox 10-0
MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcantara threw the first complete game of the MLB season in a 93-pitch shutout to lead the Miami Marlins over the Chicago White Sox 10-0 on Wednesday.
It was Alcantara’s second career complete-game shutout with fewer than 100 pitches, known as a “Maddux” in honor of Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. It was his 13th career complete game.
Liam Hicks homered, had two singles and drove in four runs to increase his Major League-leading count of RBIs to 12. Otto López also went deep and Graham Pauley doubled twice for the Marlins, who ended the homestand 5-1, their best start since 2020.
After a dominant outing against Colorado in the season-opener, Alcantara (2-0) extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner struck out seven, scattered three singles and hit a batter.
The Marlins struck quickly against White Sox starter Shane Smith with a four-run first. Hicks hit an RBI single and Connor Norby followed with a run-scoring double. They both scored on Owen Caissie’s single.
Hicks made it 6-0 with a two-run blast in the second. He drove Smith’s slider over the wall in right for his third homer.
Javier Sanoja’s two-RBI single in the third padded the lead.
Miami added two runs late when Hicks hit an RBI single in the sixth and López connected off White Sox reliever Jordan Leasure in the eighth.
ROCKIES 2, BLUE JAYS 1, 10 INNINGS
TORONTO (AP) — Pinch hitter Tyler Freeman hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and Colorado beat Toronto.
Troy Johnston had two hits, including a game-tying single in the eighth, as the Rockies won their first series of the season.
Colorado is 3-12 all-time in Toronto.
Freeman led off the 10th with a single up the middle off left-hander Brendon Little (0-1), scoring automatic runner Brenton Doyle.
Brennan Bernardino (1-0) worked one inning for the win and Jimmy Herget finished for his first save, retiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the final out and stranding the tying run at third.
Toronto’s Kevin Gausman was perfect through four innings before Ezequiel Tovar ended an 11-pitch at bat with a leadoff single in the fifth.
TJ Rumfield reached on a fielder’s choice but Gausman struck out Jordan Beck and Brett Sullivan before Rumfield was forced out at second.
Gausman allowed two hits and struck out 10 in six shutout innings. He’s the only pitcher since 1900 to strike out 10 or more and walk none in his first two starts of a season.
Colorado’s Kyle Freeland allowed one run and five hits in five innings. The left-hander walked one and struck out six.
BRAVES 5, ATHLETICS 1
ATLANTA (AP) — Drake Baldwin drove in four runs with a pair of two-out hits, Chris Sale pitched one-hit ball over six innings and Atlanta wrapped up its season-opening homestand with a victory over the struggling Athletics.
Baldwin had a two-run single off Athletics starter Luis Severino (0-1) in the second and added a two-run double in the fourth to give Sale (2-0) some breathing room after Shea Langeliers hit his fifth homer of the season — the lone base-runner allowed by the Atlanta left-hander.
Baldwin’s two-bagger came after he fouled off four straight 3-2 pitches from Elvis Alvarado, prompting the organist to belt out “Stayin’ Alive.”
Finally, on the 11th pitch of the at-bat, the reigning NL rookie of the year lined a 97 mph fastball to the wall in right-center. Matt Olson followed with a seeing-eye single up the middle to bring home Baldwin.
Baldwin nearly had a homer in the seventh, but Athletics center fielder Denzel Clarke leaped above the wall to make a dazzling catch.
It was another strong outing for Sale, who threw six scoreless innings against Kansas City on opening night. Two days after his 37th birthday, he pushed the Braves to a 4-2 mark through the first week. A year ago, Atlanta lost its first seven games on the road and went on to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
ORIOLES 8, RANGERS 3
BALTIMORE (AP) — The first game-ending call by a so-called robot umpire gave Albert Suárez his first major league save in nine years, ending Baltimore's win over Texas.
A 1-2 fastball on the upper, outside corner to Evan Carter was called a ball by plate umpire Manny Gonzalez and Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo tapped his helmet, initiating the challenge.
About 13 seconds later, the scoreboard graphic from the Automated Ball-Strike System showed the ball clipped the strike zone. Basallo jogged to the mound as Gonzalez made the announcement, and the catcher hugged Suárez, who allowed one run over three innings for his first save since Aug. 6, 2017, for San Francisco against Arizona.
Basallo and Dylan Beavers homered, Trevor Rogers pitched six solid innings and Baltimore stopped Texas’ four-game winning streak.
Rogers (2-0) allowed two runs and six hits, helping the Orioles avoid a three-game sweep. Leody Taveras, Jeremiah Jackson and Taylor Ward — their No. 8, 9 and 1 hitters — drove in two runs apiece.
Nathan Eovaldi (0-2) allowed six runs and eight hits in four-plus innings.
Corey Seager homered for the Rangers.
PIRATES 8, REDS 3
CINCINNATI (AP) — Oneil Cruz had a three-run homer, his third in two games, Paul Skenes allowed one run in five innings and Pittsburgh defeated Cincinnati to take the three-game series.
Bryan Reynolds had a two-run shot, and Nick Gonzales added a two-run double during the ninth inning.
Eugenio Suárez had a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the sixth inning for the Reds.
Cruz went 5 for 13 with three home runs and six RBIs in the series. The power-hitting outfielder has gone deep nine times in the 19 games he has played in Cincinnati.
Reds starter Andrew Abbott (0-1) retired the first two Pirates hitters before Bryan Reynolds singled to right and Marcell Ozuna drew a walk. Cruz then connected on a 2-1 curveball that was over the bottom part of the plate and drove it 407 feet over the wall in right field.
Skenes (1-1) returned to his All-Star form after giving up five runs in two-thirds of an inning last Thursday in the season opener against the New York Mets. The reigning NL Cy Young winner allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five.
The right-hander gave up two walks in the first three innings before Elly De La Cruz led off the fourth with a base hit to right. Two batters later, Nathaniel Lowe had an RBI double to right-center, snapping the Reds’ 31-inning scoreless streak against Skenes.
BREWERS 8, RAYS 2
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich hit a go-ahead, two-run single in a six-run eighth inning and Milwaukee beat Tampa Bay.
Garrett Mitchell added a two-run double during the decisive rally, Blake Perkins drove in a run with a groundout and David Hamilton capped the inning with an RBI single as Milwaukee (5-1) broke open a 2-2 game.
Brice Turang tied it earlier with a two-run homer in the third after the Rays took the lead on Yandy Díaz’s two-run shot in the top half of the inning.
Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski (1-0) struck out seven and allowed four hits and two runs in six innings. The right-hander walked two before handing the game to the bullpen. Grant Anderson, Aaron Ashby and DL Hall combined for three scoreless innings, with Hall striking out three in the ninth.
Tampa Bay (2-4) starter Drew Rasmussen allowed one run and two hits while striking out eight in five innings.
The Brewers’ eighth-inning surge opened after Joey Ortiz reached on a fielding error by shortstop Carson Williams. Turang’s sacrifice bunt was mishandled at first base, putting runners on first and second. William Contreras then singled to load the bases.
Yelich followed with a ground-ball single to right field that scored Ortiz and Turang for a 4-2 lead. Mitchell’s double to right brought home two more runs before Perkins’ RBI groundout and Hamilton’s single extended the lead to 8-2. Milwaukee went 5 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
Griffin Jax (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs in the eighth inning.
CUBS 6, ANGELS 2
CHICAGO (AP) — Matthew Boyd struck out 10 while pitching into the sixth inning, and Chicago beat Los Angeles.
Nico Hoerner had three hits for Chicago on a chilly and windy afternoon at Wrigley Field. Matt Shaw had two hits and two RBIs, and Alex Bregman reached three times in the rubber game of the three-game series.
Boyd (1-1) allowed two runs, one earned, and two hits over 5 2/3 innings in his second start of the season. The left-hander was tagged for six runs in 3 2/3 innings in a 10-4 loss to Washington on opening day.
Zach Neto had two of the Angels’ four hits. Yusei Kikuchi (0-1) was charged with five runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Chicago grabbed control with five runs in the third inning. Miguel Amaya walked and scored from first on Hoerner’s double into the gap in left-center. Bregman singled in Hoerner, and Dansby Swanson drove in Ian Happ with a sacrifice fly. Shaw and Pete Crow-Armstrong contributed two-out RBI singles.
ASTROS 6, RED SOX 4
HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa put Houston on top with a three-run homer and Christian Vázquez added a solo shot to lead the Astros to a win over Boston to complete a three-game sweep.
It’s the fifth consecutive win for the Astros and gives Boston five straight losses since an opening day victory.
Pinch-hitter Roman Anthony homered off Bryan Abreu to start the ninth and get the Red Sox within two. But Abreu struck out the next three batters to get his first save.
Houston starter Mike Burrows (1-1) allowed five hits and two runs in five innings for the win after giving up nine hits and five runs in his Astros debut Friday after an offseason trade from Pittsburgh.
The game was tied with one out in the fifth when Jose Altuve singled before Garrett Crochet (1-1) hit Yordan Alvarez in the ribs with a pitch. There were two outs with a 1-2 count when Correa smacked an off-speed pitch into the seats in left field to make it 5-2.
Crochet allowed six hits and five runs — four earned — in five innings after throwing six scoreless innings in the opening day win over the Reds.
PHILLIES 6, NATIONALS 5, 10 INNINGS
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rookie Justin Crawford had an RBI single in the 10th inning after Philadelphia rallied from a four-run deficit for a victory over Washington.
The Nationals led 5-1 in the seventh. J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper hit solo home runs to get the Phillies within 5-3. Edmundo Sosa hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth to tie the game.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the 10th, Crawford singled to right off Cole Henry (0-1). It was the third hit for Crawford, a first-round amateur draft pick in 2022 who made his major league debut on opening day.
Sosa ended the top of the 10th with a leaping catch of a CJ Abrams line drive, doubling the automatic runner off second base for winning pitcher Jhoan Duran (1-1).
Washington starter Cade Cavalli went six innings, allowing one run, five hits and two walks and striking out three.
Abrams hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning. Daylen Lile, Brady House and Joey Wiemer each had two hits. Wiemer, who entered leading the majors with a .615 average, scored twice.
Cristopher Sánchez pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Phillies, allowing one run, four hits and four walks and striking out seven.
DIAMONDBACKS 1, TIGERS 0
PHOENIX (AP) — Zac Gallen outdueled two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, Corbin Carroll homered and Arizona beat Detroit to sweep the three-game series.
Carroll homered to left-center in the first to give the D-backs a 1-0 lead. It was just the sixth homer the left-handed Skubal had ever allowed to a left-handed hitter.
Skubal (1-1) grew up in Kingman, Arizona, which is about a 3 1/2-hour drive from Chase Field. The 29-year-old was in total control — except for the Carroll homer — giving up six hits and striking out three over seven innings.
Gallen (1-1) allowed four hits and struck out two, needing 88 pitches in six innings.
Detroit’s Colt Keith nearly tied the game in the third inning, but settled for a double after his long fly ball bounced off the yellow padding at the top of the right-center wall.
The Tigers had another chance in the sixth after rookie Kevin McGonigle’s one-out triple, but Gleyber Torres lined to first baseman Jose Fernandez, who threw to third to double off McGonigle and end the inning.
Jonathan Loáisiga handled the ninth inning for his first save with the Diamondbacks, and just the ninth of his nine-year career. McGonigle led off the ninth with a single, but Torres grounded into a double play after Arizona third baseman Nolan Arenado fielded a tough short hop.
CARDINALS 2, METS 1, 11 INNINGS
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Masyn Winn singled home the winning run with two outs in the 11th inning to give St. Louis a victory over slumping New York.
Nolan Gorman hit a tying single in the sixth and reliever Gordon Graceffo (1-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the 11th.
St. Louis (4-2) took two of three games from the Mets, who went 1 for 29 with runners in scoring position during the series, including 0 for 11 in the finale. New York (3-3) is batting .162 in those situations this year.
Juan Soto homered for the Mets in the sixth — right after Francisco Lindor got picked off first base by starter Matthew Liberatore.
With two outs and automatic runner JJ Wetherholt on third, Winn lofted a blooper to shallow right field that fell just in front of diving rookie Carson Benge. It was the first hit of the series for Winn, and his first career walk-off RBI. He is 4 for 25 (.160) this season.
Tobias Myers (0-1) worked 1 2/3 innings in a hard-luck loss.
Freddy Peralta was charged with one run and three hits over 5 1/3 innings in his second start for the Mets. He struck out seven and walked two.
PADRES 7, GIANTS 1
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta struck out eight in five sharp innings and Ramón Laureano hit a two-run home run for San Diego, who beat San Francisco to avoid a three-game sweep.
The Padres and their rookie manager, Craig Stammen, were outscored 12-5 in losing the first two games of the series to the Giants and their rookie skipper, Tony Vitello. The Giants, in turn, had been outscored 13-1 in getting swept by the New York Yankees in their opening series.
Pivetta (1-1) bounced back from a rough opening day start, when he allowed six runs and seven hits in three innings of an 8-2 home loss to Detroit.
His second start was much better. He allowed just a single to former Padres teammate Luis Arraez leading off the second and walked two.
Arraez had three of the Giants’ four hits and was the only San Francisco baserunner to reach scoring position, doing so three times. The Giants struck out 14 times.
YANKEES 5, MARINERS 3
SEATTLE (AP) — Cam Schlittler pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning and Paul Goldschmidt hit a three-run homer as New York beat Seattle.
Ben Rice also homered and had an RBI double for the Yankees, who finished 5-1 on their West Coast trip to begin the season. They play their home opener Friday against the Miami Marlins.
Schlittler (2-0) yielded two hits in 6 1/3 innings and retired his last 16 batters, extending his scoreless start to the season. He struck out seven and walked none on 79 pitches, 58 strikes.
The 25-year-old right-hander blanked the Giants across 5 1/3 innings last Friday. He’s permitted only three hits in 11 2/3 innings this year while striking out 15 batters. He and teammate Max Fried have each not allowed a run in two starts this season.
GUARDIANS 4, DODGERS 1
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gavin Williams struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings, outpitching World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and José Ramírez hit his first home run of the season to lead Cleveland past Los Angeles.
Gabriel Arias also went deep for the Guardians, who took two of three games in the series from the two-time defending champions.
Williams (1-1) walked three and allowed only two hits, both singles by Andy Pages. Freddie Freeman homered off Cade Smith with two outs in the ninth, spoiling Cleveland’s shutout bid.
ROYALS 13, TWINS 9
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jonathan India hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, powering Kansas City to a victory over Joe Ryan and Minnesota.
Kyle Isbel went 4 for 4 with a homer and Noah Cameron pitched five solid innings to win his season debut. India’s fifth career slam — and first with the Royals — capped a seven-run sixth as Kansas City sent 11 batters to the plate while taking a 12-1 lead.
The Royals went 7 for 16 with runners in scoring position and scored eight runs with two outs.
Cameron (1-0) allowed one run and four hits while striking out five.
Four consecutive two-out hits opened a 3-0 lead for Kansas City in the second inning as Isaac Collins, Isbel and Maikel Garcia delivered RBIs.
Low clouds and a steady drizzle gave fielders trouble with flyballs, leading to a third-inning Royals run when India’s two-out infield popup fell untouched, scoring Vinnie Pasquantino from second.
