Yankees' Chisholm moving back to 3B: 'Not here to fight over positions'
Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be playing third base for the New York Yankees when he returns from the injured list.
Chisholm started at second base in all 29 of the games he played this season before being sidelined with a strained oblique in early May.
"(Manager Aaron) Boone gave me the choice, but he told me he really wanted me at third base," Chisholm said of the switch, per SNY. "I'm a team guy. I'm here to win a ring. I'm not here to fight over positions."
Chisholm came up with the Miami Marlins as a middle infielder before transitioning to center field in 2023.
The 27-year-old played third base after being acquired by the Yankees midway through last season. The move to third came after Gleyber Torres, who's now the Detroit Tigers' second baseman, made it known he wouldn't switch positions.
"I always wanted to play third, that's why I liked playing third last year," Chisholm said, per SNY. "As a kid, I grew up as an (Alex Rodriguez) fan. I wore 13 and three all the time as a kid."
The transition to third was not without its growing pains for Chisholm, who committed seven errors in just 46 games. He showed good range but was ultimately worth minus-two defensive runs saved.
Oswald Peraza has been the Yankees' third baseman since Oswaldo Cabrera went down with a season-ending ankle injury and is slashing just .160/.236/.333. Veteran DJ LeMathieu, meanwhile, has manned second base.
Chisholm has a .714 OPS (102 OPS+) with seven home runs on the year.
