Rangers' Seager to undergo season-ending surgery
Corey Seager has played his last game of 2024.
The Rangers star shortstop will undergo season-ending surgery for a sports hernia Friday, general manager Chris Young announced.
"Obviously, a tough decision, but with where we are at this point in the season, we felt like it was the prudent decision for him in order for him to make a full recovery, have a strong offseason, and be ready for spring training," Young said, according to Jeff Wilson of DLLS.
"I feel for Corey, but he's had a tremendous year. He's been a tremendous leader for us, and I look forward to getting him back healthy next year."
Texas initially placed Seager on the injured list Sept. 4 with nagging hip discomfort that had been bothering him for weeks. He slashed .278/.353/.512 with 30 home runs and 74 RBIs prior to being sidelined.
Injuries remain a persistent concern for Seager, as the five-time All-Star has eclipsed 150 games just twice in his decade-long career. He underwent surgery for a separate sports hernia in January.
Seager still has seven seasons left on the 10-year, $325-million deal he inked with the Rangers in November 2021.
Texas entered Thursday out of the playoff picture with a 70-76 record.
