Bo Porter is going to rewatch every Astros game by choice
As if watching the Houston Astros lose almost every day for six months of the year wasn't enough, manager Bo Porter is going to rewatch the entirety of 2013 in the offseason.
The first-year manager said Wednesday he plans to take a look at his decisions from all 162 games and try to get to know more about his players, reports MLB.com.
Houston's 108th loss, 7-3 to the Rangers, is a franchise worst and with three games left to play it tops last season's 55-107 record. It's the most losses in the majors since the Arizona Diamondbacks went 51-111 in 2004.
"A lot of times in baseball, because it's day to day, the next game pops up each day. You may see it, but then as you sit and watch over the course of the year, you start to see certain things," Porter said. "I'm a firm believer you get better at the things that cause you to lose games, it increases your chances of winning."
This all sounds as puzzling as an incline in center field.
Nevertheless, Porter will try to file notes on highlights, errors, and other specific things he collects in his studies.
"So I'm not only watching the games this offseason, I'm watching the games and I have the notes and the break points, so when I look at the particular games I also know what I'm looking for."
As crazy as sitting down to watch Astros games instead of going on a vacation and not thinking about the Astros is, Porter has already done this once -- he watched all 162 games of the 2012 season to get a better read on the team he was about to take over.
The Astros have now lost 100+ games for three consecutive seasons. In the last two decades dating back to 1993, the Astros only lost 90 games once (2000).
