Astros' Javier to undergo season-ending elbow surgery
Houston Astros pitcher Cristian Javier will undergo season-ending surgery on his pitching elbow, the club announced Wednesday.
The Astros initially placed Javier on the injured list on May 27 with right forearm discomfort.
Javier is expected to have Tommy John surgery, a source told The Athletic's Chandler Rome.
The typical recovery timeline from Tommy John surgery is 12-14 months, meaning the 27-year-old might not pitch again until near the end of the 2025 season.
Javier, under contract with the Astros through 2027, posted a 3.89 ERA over 34 2/3 innings this year.
Injuries have decimated Houston's pitchers in 2024. José Urquidy may require a second Tommy John surgery, Luis Garcia had the operation in 2023, and Lance McCullers Jr. remains sidelined.
