Mets place Díaz on IL with shoulder impingement

The New York Mets placed struggling closer Edwin Díaz on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement, the team announced Wednesday.
The club recalled lefty Josh Walker from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Typically among baseball's most elite relievers, Díaz has pitched to a 5.40 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with four blown saves in nine opportunities this season.
The two-time All-Star recently expressed a willingness to be removed from the closer's role while he tries to get back on track, having allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs over 4 1/3 innings since May 13.
Díaz, 30, is in the second year of a five-year, $102-million contract he signed with the Mets ahead of the 2023 season.
