Houck, Red Sox discussed extension
The Boston Red Sox and right-hander Tanner Houck discussed a contract extension but were unable to come to terms.
"(We had) discussions," Houck said Sunday, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. "But we’re at where we are now. I put that behind me whenever we shook hands and said, 'Let’s go out and win as many games as we can.' The business side is the business side. If you go out there and throw 200 innings, make 30 quality starts, it'll take care of itself."
Houck isn't scheduled to become a free agent until the conclusion of the 2027 season. The 27-year-old is eligible for arbitration for the first time following this campaign.
"I try not to worry about that stuff," Houck said. "I know that it can be a hot topic, but ultimately, if I'm worried about the business side and stuff off the field, that's taking away from my focus of stuff on the field and the stuff that will get you to that goal. I understand that if I go out there and I do what I know I can do, it'll potentially happen."
Houck is putting together a breakout campaign for the Red Sox so far in 2024. He owns a 3-5 record with a 2.17 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 57 strikeouts across 58 innings.
