Mets' Showalter focused on present after Stearns hiring

Manager Buck Showalter isn't thinking about his future with the New York Mets after the club reportedly hired David Stearns as president of baseball operations.

"I don't think about those things," Showalter said Tuesday, according to Dan Martin of the New York Post.

"This is not the time and place for my mind to be going there."

Showalter, who has one year remaining on his contract, added that he hasn't spoken to owner Steve Cohen or general manager Billy Eppler about his status.

The Mets hired the 67-year-old ahead of the 2022 campaign. Showalter led the team to the postseason with a 101-61 record in his first season at the helm before falling to the San Diego Padres in the wild-card series.

New York failed to build off last season's success, emerging as one of baseball's most disappointing clubs in 2023.

"We, as a staff, try to stay on task, and things usually work out if you stay true to the game and what your job description is," Showalter said.

Showalter is 19th on the all-time wins list for managers with 1,718 in his 22 seasons.
