Belt: 'We all know what we need to do' for Blue Jays to make playoffs

The Toronto Blue Jays are 3.5 games out of a wild-card spot in the American League, and first baseman Brandon Belt believes the club needs to let its play on the field do the talking.

"I think we've had enough meetings this year and really, at this time, it would almost be like beating a dead horse," Belt said Wednesday, according to Sportsnet's Hazel Mae. He added, "We all know what we need to do."

The Blue Jays' odds to make the postseason are down to 38.2% entering play Wednesday, according to FanGraphs, which is the lowest mark this season.

Despite the dwindling odds, Belt is confident in the team's ability to step up.

"Three-and-a-half games is not insurmountable by any means," Belt said. He added: "The thing I remember most about those (World Series) Giants teams: We showed up when it mattered, and this team definitely has what it takes to show up."

Belt, who was part of the San Francisco Giants' 2012 and 2014 World Series championship teams, is out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale with the Washington Nationals with a back issue.

"I've had this type of (back) problem before so I usually know what happens, but this is not going to keep me out for a long time," he said.

Belt has had a productive season at the plate in his first year with the Blue Jays. The 35-year-old owns a .834 OPS with 15 home runs and 37 RBIs in 94 games in 2023.
