Rangers ace deGrom will undergo Tommy John surgery
Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom requires season-ending Tommy John surgery, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
DeGrom has been sidelined due to right elbow inflammation since the end of April.
The Rangers signed deGrom to a five-year, $185-million contract in the offseason.
"This stinks. It's not ideal," deGrom said, according to Grant. "But at least we know what it is now. I want to get it fixed and will set a goal to be back before the end of next year."
The 34-year-old has struggled to stay healthy, making just 26 starts over the last two seasons.
The Rangers transferred deGrom to the 60-day injured list Monday. A follow-up MRI revealed the extent of the damage.
"We have gone backwards. The MRI revealed damage that was significant," Rangers general manager Chris Young said, according to Grant.
"I'm glad we have clarity. Everyone being in the dark was not good. Now we have a course of action, and we will attack it."
DeGrom also underwent Tommy John surgery when he was a member of the New York Mets in 2010.
The two-time Cy Young winner finishes his first season with the Rangers after just six starts, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.67 ERA and 45 strikeouts across 30 1/3 innings.
The Rangers have excelled despite deGrom's absence, sitting atop the AL West with a 39-20 record.
