Yankees' Boone impressed by Volpe: 'He's looked the part'

It's always good to impress the manager when you're a prospect trying to win an Opening Day roster spot, and star farmhand Anthony Volpe has done just that for the New York Yankees.

"He's been everything we expected and hoped for," Aaron Boone said of Volpe's performance this spring, according to Bryan Hoch of The Athletic. "He's looked the part."

Volpe, 21, entered camp with seemingly slim chances of making the team due to a logjam of talent on the major-league roster. The young shortstop would have to contend with Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who seem cemented into Opening Day roles. Gleyber Torres could also move to shortstop to accommodate DJ LeMahieu starting at second base.

However, the No. 5 overall prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, has been impressive in Grapefruit League action, hitting .277/.393/.574 with three homers, eight walks, and five stolen bases over 16 games.

Earlier this spring, Volpe impressed Yankees captain and reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge, who said the young star "plays hard every single day." He added that the best players "should be up helping the New York Yankees."
