Vladdy: 'I'm going to trust my talent' in 2023
First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. admitted Friday that he "put a lot of pressure" on himself last year, resulting in a relatively down season. This campaign, the Toronto Blue Jays All-Star is looking to take a different approach.
"As a ball player, you want to get better every year," Guerrero said through an interpreter, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. "You all know the numbers I put up in '21. Last spring training, I came here to try putting up even better numbers, and I think that affected me a little bit. This year, I'm coming here with a plan, and I'm going to trust my talent."
After hitting a league-leading 48 home runs in 2021 with a 1.002 OPS, Guerrero regressed to 32 long balls and a .819 OPS across 160 games last season.
Guerrero made headlines at spring training last year when he said the Blue Jays' 2022 season would be the "movie" after the 2021 campaign's "trailer." However, Guerrero is now staying away from any bold proclamations.
"This year, I'm not going to say anything. You guys gotta watch it," Guerrero said.
