The New York Mets and catcher Tomas Nido agreed to a two-year, $3.7-million extension, sources told Robert Murray of FanSided.

The reported agreement covers Nido's final two years of arbitration eligibility. He'd still be on track to become a free agent after the 2024 season.

Nido and the Mets avoided arbitration last week with a one-year, $1.575-million contract. Under the new deal, he'll earn $1.6 million in 2023 and $2.1 million next year, per Murray.

The 28-year-old started in 86 of his 98 games last season while splitting time behind the plate with the now-departed James McCann. Nido, like the rest of New York's 2022 catching corps, struggled offensively, hitting .239/.276/.324 with three homers and 28 RBIs. However, he contributed plenty with his glove, tallying eight defensive runs saved and five catcher framing runs.

Nido will likely form the right-handed half of a catching platoon with fellow veteran Omar Narvaez next season. They'll keep the position warm for top prospect Francisco Alvarez, who's on the 40-man roster but will likely start his year at Triple-A.

Nido, a native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, owns a lifetime .580 OPS with 13 homers across parts of six big-league seasons, all with the Mets.
