The Boston Red Sox have traded left-handed reliever Darwinzon Hernandez to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations, the teams announced Wednesday.

Hernandez was recently designated for assignment after Boston signed infielder Justin Turner.

The 26-year-old has shown elite strikeout stuff throughout his four-year career but has rarely parlayed that into success, struggling with control and command. Over 85 1/3 career innings, Hernandez possesses a 5.06 ERA and 4.54 FIP with a 32.3% strikeout rate, 17.7% walk rate, and 1.05 HR/9.

Hernandez joins an Orioles bullpen led by closer Felix Bautista and setup man Dillon Tate. Baltimore also recently brought back Mychal Givens, who could earn a high-leverage role.

Hernandez has one minor-league option remaining.

The Orioles' bullpen ranked 10th last year, according to FanGraphs WAR. It also received strong contributions from Cionel Perez and Bryan Baker, who'll return this upcoming season.

To make room on the roster, Baltimore designated Lewin Diaz for assignment. The Orioles recently claimed Diaz on Jan. 5 after DFAing him on Dec. 21.
