Sabean most recently served as executive vice president of baseball operations for the San Francisco Giants. He joined the Giants in 1993, earning a promotion to general manager prior to the 1996 campaign. Sabean played an integral role in building the dynastic club that won the 2010, 2012, and 2014 World Series.
He relinquished his position with the Giants following the 2018 season.
"Brian has been a pillar of our game and a cornerstone of this franchise for 30 years, and we are extremely appreciative of his leadership and the legacy he leaves behind," the Giants said in a statement.
The hiring marks somewhat of a homecoming for Sabean, whose first job in MLB was as a scout for the Yankees. He went on to serve as New York's director of scouting and vice president of player development and was responsible for recruiting and signing Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte, among others.
