The New York Yankees placed All-Star left-hander Nestor Cortes on the injured list with a left groin strain, the team announced Thursday.

In a corresponding roster move, New York reinstated outfielder/designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton from the IL. Reliever Greg Weissert was also selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Cortes has been one of baseball's breakout stars in 2022. The 27-year-old owns a 9-4 record with a 2.68 ERA, 3.41 FIP, and 133 strikeouts in 131 innings pitched.

With Cortes sidelined, right-hander Clarke Schmidt will step into the rotation and start on Sunday in Oakland, according to ESPN's Marly Rivera.

Despite Cortes' setback, the Yankees are set to receive a boost during their road trip with All-Star reliever Clay Holmes expected to return from the injured list, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.

Holmes has been sidelined since Aug. 14 with back spasms. The 29-year-old had struggled before the injury but emerged as one of MLB's best relievers this season, posting a 2.39 ERA with 17 saves and 51 strikeouts across 49 innings.

Stanton, meanwhile, will hit third as the Yankees' DH on Thursday after spending nearly a month on the IL with an Achilles injury. The 32-year-old, who went hitless during his two-game rehab stint at Double-A Somerset, owns a .807 OPS with 24 homers across 328 plate appearances in the majors this year.

Weissert, 27, earned his first call-up to the majors after six seasons in the Yankees' system. The Fordham product owns a 1.76 ERA and 0.89 WHIP with 67 strikeouts and 18 saves at Triple-A this year.

Outfielder Harrison Bader was transferred to the 60-day IL to open Weissert's 40-man roster spot.

The Yankees are in Oakland for a series against the Athletics that begins Thursday, followed by visits to the Los Angeles Angels and Tampa Bay Rays.
