Jason Heyward's time with the Chicago Cubs is nearing an end.

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said Monday that Heyward - who has one year remaining on his deal - won't return to the club in 2023, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.

He added that Heyward - who's been on the injured list since the end of June with right knee inflammation - also won't play for the remainder of this season, according to The Athletic's Patrick Mooney.

The decision was made after lengthy discussions between Hoyer and Heyward, per Rogers. Chicago, which wants to give younger players more playing time, will allow the outfielder to search for a new team this offseason.

Heyward has struggled mightily in 2022. He owns a .204/.278/.277 slash line with one home run and 10 RBIs in 48 games.

Heyward, 32, helped the Cubs end their 108-year World Series drought in 2016 after signing an eight-year, $184-million contract in 2015. The five-time Gold Glove winner was credited with giving a rousing speech in the clubhouse during a rain delay in Game 7 against Cleveland, which helped spur Chicago to an 8-7 victory in extra innings.
