Yankees select 6-foot-7 OF Spencer Jones in 1st round
The New York Yankees selected Vanderbilt outfielder Spencer Jones with the 25th overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft.
The 21-year-old hit .370/.460/.644 with 12 homers and 14 stolen bases over 61 games with the Commodores this year.
Adding intrigue, he stands at 6-foot-7, 225 lbs, the same height as Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge.
Entering the draft, Jones was ranked as the 51st-best prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He was originally a two-way star out of high school but was forced to end his time on the mound after dealing with an elbow fracture and then eventually undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Despite Jones' size, he's extremely athletic and seen as a five-tool player with above-average power. The lefty is expected to stick in a corner outfield spot, but he also played well while manning first base for Vanderbilt.
