Royals' Merrifield has games played streak snapped due to toe injury
Kansas City Royals infielder/outfielder Whit Merrifield will see his franchise-record streak for consecutive games played end at 553 after he was diagnosed with a bone bruise and ligament swelling in his right toe, according to MLB.com's Anne Rogers.

Merrifield has been recommended to wear a walking boot for the next few weeks and won't return to the lineup until after the All-Star break, per Rogers.
The 33-year-old says he's disappointed to see the streak end and will look back at the accomplishment fondly.
"It's unfortunate it had to happen this way," Merrifield said. "I've been lucky, a good word for some instances, but I put myself in a position to play every day physically, mentality-wise. I show up ready to play no matter the circumstances."
The two-time All-Star owns a .240/.292/.343 slash line with five home runs, 36 RBIs, 45 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases in 84 games this season.
