The Miami Marlins upgraded their bullpen Sunday, acquiring relievers Tanner Scott and Cole Sulser from the Baltimore Orioles for left-hander Antonio Velez, outfielder Kevin Guerrero, a competitive balance draft pick (No. 67 in 2022), and a PTBNL.
Sulser is coming off an excellent season in which he posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 73 strikeouts over 63 1/3 innings. The 32-year-old right-hander also converted eight saves. He'll be first-year arbitration-eligible next season.
Scott struggled at times in 2021, authoring a 5.17 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. However, the left-hander struck out 70 over 54 innings. He owns a career 12.0 K/9. The 27-year-old is set to earn $1.05 million this year and has two more seasons of team control.
Velez split time between Single-A and Double-A in 2021. He pitched to a 2.55 ERA and 0.86 WHIP while striking out 93 over 99 innings.
Guerrero appeared in 40 games in Dominican Summer League. The 17-year-old slashed .260/.373/.298 with four extra-base hits and 13 stolen bases while also playing center field. Neither player was listed in Miami's top 30 prospects.
