Report: Astros add Goodrum on reported 1-year, $2.1M deal
The Houston Astros and infielder/outfielder Niko Goodrum are in agreement on a contract that will pay him $2.1 million plus incentives, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
Goodrum went unclaimed on waivers and elected free agency after struggling in 2021 for the Detroit Tigers. He slashed .214/.292/.359 with nine home runs, 33 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases in 90 games last season.
The versatile Goodrum is capable of playing shortstop, second base, and outfield. In 387 career games, he owns a .230/.303/.396 slash line with 42 home runs, 151 RBIs, and 45 stolen bases.
The opportunity to play for an organization that has qualified for five consecutive American League Championship Series appealed to Goodrum.
"I hate to lose," Goodrum told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart. "Winning will be a culture change and very different from when I was in Detroit. I'm very excited for that."
The 30-year-old will provide experienced depth to Astros manager Dusty Baker while also being an option to play some games at shortstop if Houston is unable to re-sign free-agent Carlos Correa.
