Sabathia: Jeter 'pissed' about Marlins exit, wanted to sign Castellanos
Derek Jeter made headlines during the lockout, surprisingly and suddenly stepping down from his role as CEO of the Miami Marlins. Now, thanks to his former New York Yankees teammate CC Sabathia, we're getting more insight into some of Jeter's disagreements with the Marlins.
"No matter what you try to do to make (the Marlins) better, at the end of the day, there's just always been bad ownership," Sabathia said on his "R2C2" podcast. He added that Jeter really wanted to add free-agent slugger Nick Castellanos this winter.
"I just feel bad for him because I know how much time he put into that and how serious he took that job, and I know he's pissed," Sabathia continued. "Yeah, it sucks, but the Marlins are the Marlins."
Jeter was a key member of the Bruce Sherman-led ownership group that successfully purchased the Marlins from Jeffrey Loria for $1.2 billion in 2017.
The Hall of Fame shortstop announced March 1 he would step down as Marlins CEO and sell his shares in the club over a difference in "the vision for the future of the franchise."
