Free-agent slugger Kyle Schwarber is seeking a three-year, $60-million contract, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

The Miami Marlins have reached out to the 28-year-old, Jackson adds.

Teams and players are prohibited from contacting one another while in a lockout, which the league owners formally put into place Thursday after the collective bargaining agreement expired. Any Schwarber contract would have to be worked out when the lockout ends and be subject to the new CBA's rules.

Schwarber split the 2021 campaign between the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals, hitting .266/.374/.554 with 32 homers and 71 RBIs over 113 games. The former All-Star started his MLB career by playing six seasons with the Chicago Cubs before being non-tendered prior to his final year of arbitration eligibility.

The Nationals traded Schwarber to the Red Sox midseason to help the team's rebuild, but the club has reportedly expressed a willingness to bring back the slugger.

The Marlins have also contacted Nick Castellanos, but he's considered to be out of Miami's price range, per Jackson.

Both Schwarber and Castellanos have spent time as corner outfielders in recent years but would likely be better suited for designated-hitter roles. There's some conjecture that the forthcoming CBA will include the adoption of the DH in the National League, which was instituted during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season but repealed for this past year.

The Marlins were relatively active this winter before the lockout, reshaping their roster by recruiting outfielder Avisail Garcia on a four-year, $53-million contract, extending right-hander Sandy Alcantara on a five-year, $56-million deal, and acquiring catcher Jacob Stallings and third baseman Joey Wendle via trades.
