Braves GM Anthopoulos away from WS celebration with COVID-19
Atlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos was unable to partake in his team's World Series celebrations because he's away from the club with COVID-19, the executive told Sportsnet's Hazel Mae.
Anthopoulos was an architect of the championship roster, hatching a series of deadline deals, including ones for NLCS MVP Eddie Rosario and World Series MVP Jorge Soler.
Instead of celebrating the first championship of his career with the team at Minute Maid Park, Anthopoulos is at his Georgia home and watched the game with his family.
"I just didn't want to be a distraction before the end," Anthopoulos told Mae.
The 44-year-old has been the Braves' GM since the conclusion of the 2017 season, joining Atlanta after serving with the Los Angeles Dodgers' front office. He also helmed the Toronto Blue Jays' front office from 2009-15, winning Sporting News Executive of the Year in his final season.
Anthopoulos succeeded John Coppolella, who was banned for life from baseball following an investigation into tampering with regards to signing amateur international players.
