Report: Scherzer no longer starting Game 6 due to arm fatigue

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Max Scherzer will not start Saturday's Game 6 of the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves, sources told Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times.

Scherzer is dealing with arm fatigue and has no structural damage, the L.A. Times' Mike DiGiovanna reports.

A replacement starter is expected to be named on Saturday.

Scherzer started Game 2, two days after picking up a save in the Dodgers' division series-clinching win. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings and said postgame that his "arm was dead." He would have made the Game 6 start on five days' rest, but his arm has yet to bounce back, a source told Juan Toribio of MLB.com.

The 37-year-old's status for the rest of the series is unclear. If the Dodgers win on Saturday, it's possible he could pitch in Game 7, but that would depend on how he's feeling, according to DiGiovanna.

Manager Dave Roberts now faces a dilemma with the Dodgers' season on the line. If Walker Buehler isn't available on short rest, the Dodgers may have to go with a bullpen game, as they did in Game 5. Tony Gonsolin and David Price are bulk options in that scenario, though Price was only added to the roster as an injury replacement Friday and hasn't pitched in the playoffs.

The Dodgers, who are trying to overturn a 3-1 deficit in the NLCS for the second straight year, are already without Clayton Kershaw for the postseason. Reliever Joe Kelly was hurt in Friday's game and is now off the roster.
