The Boston Red Sox removed right-hander Garrett Richards from their division series roster due to a left hamstring strain and replaced him with reliever Matt Barnes, the team announced Friday.

Since he was removed during the series, Richards is now ineligible for both the rest of the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays and the ALCS should the Red Sox advance. He'd be able to return if the Red Sox reach the World Series.

Richards relieved Eduardo Rodriguez in the second inning of Game 1, faced one batter to end the bottom of the second, and then Nick Pivetta replaced him to start the next inning.

The 33-year-old posted a 4.87 ERA in 40 appearances (22 starts) for Boston during the regular season.

Barnes, an All-Star before the playoffs, spent much of September on the COVID-19 IL. He got into six contests after being activated on Sept. 17 but did not pitch in the AL wild-card game.

The Red Sox trail the Rays 1-0 in their ALDS.
