Reds acquire Cessa, Wilson from Yankees for PTBNL

The Cincinnati Reds acquired right-hander Luis Cessa and left-hander Justin Wilson from the New York Yankees for a player to be named later, the team announced following Tuesday's game.

Cessa, 29, posted a 2.82 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 38 1/3 innings out of the Yankees' bullpen this season. He holds two more years of arbitration eligibility and isn't slated for free agency until after the 2023 campaign.

Wilson, 33, has been limited to 18 innings this season due to shoulder and hamstring injuries. He's posted a 7.50 ERA, but that's come from a small sample size, and his career mark is 3.44. The veteran southpaw holds a $7.15-million team option - and a $2.3-million player option - with a $1.15-million buyout for 2022.

The trade helps the Reds shore up their relief corps, as Cincinnati entered Tuesday with the worst bullpen ERA (5.35) in MLB.

By dealing Cessa and Wilson, the Yankees clear some salary while also opening up two spots on their 40-man roster. Another deal could be in the works.
