Verdugo tried to throw the ball to a young Red Sox fan during warmups, but a Yankees fan intercepted it and threw the ball at him when his back was turned.
"You don't throw shit at people," Verdugo said, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe. "It's just that simple."
Red Sox manager Alex Cora pulled his team from the field, temporarily halting the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
"I know my left fielder. I know Alex. He needed time to breathe and to get his thoughts," Cora said postgame after the contest was called due to rain, according to Bill Koch of the Providence Journal. "And it seemed like nobody was listening to him."
The fan who threw the ball was apparently identified, according to Sweeny Murti of WFAN, and play eventually resumed.
Cora also said there's no place for that kind of behavior at the ballpark.
"We lost the game and the rain and all the other stuff, but the fact Alex got hit by a baseball ... it's like, did we really get to this?" Cora said, according to Chris Cotillo of Masslive.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone called the incident "embarrassing."

"There's zero place for that in this great game and in this great rivalry. Players should never feel like they have to worry about anything like that." pic.twitter.com/MNO8nd8zTA
