Miami Marlins right-hander Sixto Sanchez will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, the team announced Monday.

An MRI revealed a small tear in the posterior capsule of his right shoulder, according to Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. The club hopes he'll be ready for spring training in 2022.

Sanchez had been dealing with shoulder inflammation since April, though he still started a throwing program in early June. He most recently began throwing from 120 feet prior to this setback, according to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com.

The 22-year-old had yet to make an appearance this season after posting a 3.46 ERA with 33 strikeouts against 11 walks over 39 innings during his sterling rookie campaign.
