Mets' Syndergaard on track for September return, Carrasco by early August
The New York Mets have some clarity on when they - and ace Jacob deGrom - can expect to receive some much-needed reinforcements.
Manager Luis Rojas is "aiming for" right-hander Noah Syndergaard to rejoin the club on September 1, according to The Athletic's Tim Britton.
Syndergaard has been playing catch off flat ground for about a week while recovering from last year's Tommy John surgery, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.
The All-Star hurler was making progress toward a return earlier in the season before being shut down for six weeks in late May due to elbow inflammation.
In addition to Syndergaard, Rojas is eyeing late July or early August for right-hander Carlos Carrasco to make his team debut, Britton notes.
Carrasco, who the club acquired from Cleveland as part of the Francisco Lindor trade, hasn't pitched this campaign due to a torn hamstring after also dealing with a sore elbow in spring training.
The Mets are 41-36 and sit atop the NL East, leading the 2nd-place Nationals by 2 1/2 games despite a litany of injuries that have plagued the team all season.
New York has gotten healthier in recent days with outfielders Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo returning, but the club also had to place left-hander David Peterson on the 10-day injured list on Saturday due to a right side injury.
