Braves' Soroka needs season-ending surgery after re-tearing Achilles
Atlanta Braves right-hander Mike Soroka suffered a major setback in his recovery from a right Achilles tear.
An MRI revealed a complete re-tear of the tendon, which will require season-ending surgery, the team announced Saturday.
Soroka will undergo the surgery within the week, the team added.
The 23-year-old pitched 13 2/3 innings in 2020 before originally suffering the injury during his third start. Soroka was following up a rookie campaign where he finished runner-up in NL Rookie of the Year voting and sixth in Cy Young, authoring a 2.68 ERA and 3.45 FIP over 29 starts.
Soroka, who was expected to return by late August, felt a pop while walking in the clubhouse at Truist Park during his rehab.
Earlier this month, Soroka underwent exploratory surgery due to discomfort and the team found it was due to his body rejecting the sutures in his Achilles.
