Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer said he's day-to-day after tweaking his groin during Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants, according to Jessica Camerato of MLB.com.

Scherzer added that an MRI showed inflammation but not a muscle strain.

The right-hander threw only 12 pitches in the first inning before leaving with the injury, according to Dan Kolko of MASN.

Scherzer started stretching his lower half after his final pitch and eventually left the contest following a mound visit from manager Dave Martinez and a trainer.

The three-time Cy Young winner entered the game with a 2.22 ERA and 12.2 K/9 over 77 innings (12 starts) in his age-36 campaign.

Losing Scherzer could be devastating for a Nationals club that's already missing right-hander Stephen Strasburg. Washington (25-33) sits last in the NL East.
