The Minnesota Twins placed outfielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list with a hip strain, manager Rocco Baldelli said Friday, according to Phil Miller of the Minnesota Star Tribune.

The reigning American League Player of the Month is likely going to miss more than the minimum 10 days, as Baldelli estimates the club will be without Buxton for weeks.

It's unclear when Buxton sustained the injury, but he collided into the center-field wall while trying to make a catch during Thursday's game and had difficulty running out a pair of ground balls.

An MRI revealed a Grade 2 strain, Miller notes.

The oft-injured Buxton was in the midst of what appeared to be a long-awaited breakout campaign. The No. 2 pick in 2012 is hitting .370/.408/.772 with nine home runs, 17 RBIs, and five stolen bases in 24 games this season.

The Twins promoted outfield prospect Trevor Larnach and designated left-hander Brandon Waddell for assignment in corresponding moves, Miller adds.
