The Toronto Blue Jays designated right-hander Tanner Roark for assignment, the club announced Friday.
Roark signed a two-year, $24-million contract before the 2020 season. The 34-year-old went 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 54 2/3 innings over the life of the deal and was recently demoted to the bullpen.
The move comes as the Blue Jays reinstate outfielder Teoscar Hernandez from the injured list. Toronto also optioned outfielder Jonathan Davis to the alternate training site in a corresponding move.
Roark had a mostly effective career before his Blue Jays tenure, putting together a 3.71 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 1,100 1/3 innings across seven seasons with the Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds, and Oakland Athletics.
