Yankees' Boone plans to speak to Torres about not running out grounder

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone plans to speak with Gleyber Torres after the shortstop lacked hustle during a seventh-inning at-bat against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

Torres jogged up the first-base line after tapping a ball in front of home plate between Braves right-hander Ian Anderson and catcher Travis d'Arnaud. Torres was thrown out easily on the play.

"I think any time you have that kind of situation where the guy has to get off the mound, you better get after it," Boone said, according to CBS Sports, before mentioning he would speak with his young infielder before Thursday's game against the Cleveland Indians.

"That's got to be better."

Torres said he "didn't see the ball well" and wasn't sure if "it was fair or foul" before admitting he could have tried harder while running to first.

"I know what I did, and I feel like I can put a little more effort on that (ground ball)," the two-time All-Star explained.

"Tomorrow is another day, and I just want to (help the team)," he added.

The base-running issue surfaced as Torres continued to struggle at the plate. The 24-year-old owns a .186/.294/.220 slash line in 16 games so far this season after hitting a combined .271/.340/.493 between 2018-2020.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have lost seven of their last 10 games and sit last in the American League East standings.
