Report: Mets' Carrasco likely out 6-8 weeks with torn hamstring
New York Mets right-hander Carlos Carrasco underwent an MRI after injuring his right hamstring during conditioning drills, the team's broadcast announced during Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals.
The injury was later diagnosed as a tear, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Carrasco is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks minimum, sources told Mike Puma of the New York Post.
"It's devastating," Marcus Stroman said, according to Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News. "I want him in the rotation badly."
The 33-year-old was already questionable for the April 1 opener because of minor elbow soreness.
Carrasco was acquired from the Cleveland Indians in January along with Francisco Lindor. "Cookie" finished 3-4 with a 2.91 ERA, 3.59 FIP, and a 10.9 K/9 over 68 innings last season.
The veteran has received Cy Young consideration twice during his career, including a fourth-place finish in 2017 when he was an 18-game winner.
The Mets' starting rotation for Opening Day is now down to Jacob deGrom, Stroman, and Taijuan Walker, with Noah Syndergaard sidelined to begin the season due to Tommy John surgery. The remaining two spots are settled between David Peterson, Joey Lucchesi, Mike Montgomery, Jordan Yamamoto, Robert Gsellman, and Sean Reid-Foley.
