The Oakland Athletics have signed right-handed reliever Trevor Rosenthal to a one-year, $11-million contract, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

The money in the deal is heavily deferred, with Rosenthal earning $3 million in 2021, $3 million in 2022, and the remaining $5 million in 2023, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Rosenthal should slot into Oakland's ninth-inning role after former closer Liam Hendriks signed a four-year, $54-million deal with the Chicago White Sox in January.

The former All-Star had multi-year offers but signed with the A's because of a higher annual salary and an opportunity to record saves, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The 30-year-old Rosenthal recorded 11 saves to go with a 1.90 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 23 2/3 innings with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres in 2020.

It served as a major bounce-back season for the veteran hurler after a disastrous 2019, during which he authored a 13.50 ERA in 15 1/3 innings in his return from Tommy John surgery after missing the 2018 campaign.
