New York Yankees third baseman Gio Urshela underwent surgery on his right elbow to remove a bone chip, the team announced Friday.

The anticipated recovery time for the procedure is three months. That puts Urshela on a rough timetable to be resuming baseball activity midway through spring training.

Urshela, 29, is coming off another strong season with the Yankees, hitting .298/.368/.490 with six homers over 43 games.

In the event Urshela isn't ready for Opening Day, Tyler Wade or Thairo Estrada could take over at the hot corner. However, one of Wade or Estrada is likely already considered as the fill-in for DJ LeMahieu, who remains a free agent after earning MVP consideration in back-to-back seasons with the Yankees.

Miguel Andujar could also be considered for the vacancy. Since his impressive rookie campaign in 2018, Andujar has posted an underwhelming .193/.219/.257 slash line with one homer in 33 games while dealing with multiple injuries.
