Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Brendan McKay will undergo season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder Wednesday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

The team is reportedly hopeful he'll be ready in time for spring training.

McKay missed the start of summer training camp due to COVID-19 and was working out at the Rays' alternate site before being shut down last week with shoulder soreness, Topkin notes.

As a rookie in 2019, McKay went 2-4 with a 5.14 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 56 strikeouts in 49 innings.

McKay, 24, was selected fourth overall by the Rays in the 2017 draft.
