The Milwaukee Brewers signed left-handed starter Brett Anderson to a 1-year contract, the team announced Friday.

The deal will pay Anderson $5 million, but he can potentially earn another $2 million in performance bonuses, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

Anderson, 31, spent the 2019 season with the Oakland Athletics, posting a 3.89 ERA and 4.57 FIP over 31 starts. His 12.1% strikeout rate was the lowest among qualified starters in all of baseball.

Anderson, who has undergone two back surgeries, said his key to staying healthy last year was core work. "I think I have a set of abs underneath a layer or two," he told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. "It doesn't really show, but I think they're down there somewhere."

The 11-year veteran has spent the majority of his career with the A's, making brief stops with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs, and Toronto Blue Jays. Over 997 1/3 career innings, Anderson owns a 4.05 ERA and 3.91 FIP.
