Shohei Ohtani will undergo surgery on his left knee and will require eight-to-12 weeks of recovery time, Los Angeles Angels general manager Billy Eppler said in a statement Thursday.

The surgery will take place Friday in Los Angeles and will address a bipartite patella.

The two-way phenom missed the beginning of the 2019 campaign while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but returned as a full-time designated hitter for the Angels in early May. He posted a .286/.343/.505 slash line with 18 home runs and 12 stolen bases over 106 games after winning American League Rookie of the Year last year.

Ohtani is expected to be able to return to his two-way role as both a pitcher and hitter for the beginning of the 2020 season. The 25-year-old authored a 3.31 ERA and 3.57 FIP in 51 2/3 innings pitched over 10 starts in 2018 before rupturing his ulnar collateral ligament.
