The San Diego Padres placed shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a stress reaction in his lower back, the team announced Friday. The move is retroactive to Aug. 14.

Manager Andy Green said Tatis will "most likely" miss the remainder of the season, according to Paul Casella of MLB.com.

Tatis was forced out of Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to back spasms. He was held out Wednesday with hopes that he’d be able to avoid the IL.

This is Tatis' second trip to the IL this season after a hamstring injury forced him to miss more than a month.

Despite the time lost to injury, Tatis remains in the thick of the NL Rookie of the Year race. In 84 games, he hit .317/.379/.590 with 22 home runs and 16 stolen bases.

Additionally, second baseman Ian Kinsler has been placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Aug. 13, with a herniated cervical disc.

Kinsler has largely struggled in the first season of a two-year, $8-million contract. The veteran is batting .217/.278/.368 with nine home runs and 22 RBIs.

In corresponding moves, the Padres recalled infielder Ty France and outfielder Travis Jankowski from Triple-A.

France - who's appeared in 34 games for San Diego this season - has absolutely torched Triple-A pitching. He’s batting .399 with 27 home runs and 89 RBIs in 76 games with El Paso.

The expectation is that France will play second base with Luis Urias shifting to shortstop during Tatis’ absence, according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
