Bogaerts laments blowout loss to lowly Orioles: 'It's unacceptable'

Xander Bogaerts struggled Friday to make sense of an 11-2 loss to the futile Baltimore Orioles.

"I think this is definitely one of the worst (losses)," the All-Star shortstop said, according to Zachary Silver of MLB.com. "Especially if you talk about from a team standpoint. They're not one of the leading teams in any category or one of the top teams. I think they're last in our division."

The defeat dropped the Boston Red Sox to 4-4 since the All-Star break and delivered another setback to their playoff aspirations. The defending World Series champions are now 11 games behind the New York Yankees for tops in the AL East and three games back of the Oakland Athletics for a wild-card spot.

Bogaerts, who was riding a 10-game hit streak prior to Friday's contest, went 0-for-4 against the O's. John Means pitched six strong innings while surrendering just four hits and two runs, easily outperforming a shaky David Price.

"I wish I knew, man," Bogaerts said when asked about Boston's inconsistencies. "I don't know. It seems like every team that comes to play against us, they are playing extra. They really want to beat us and humiliate us.

"But for the most part, we haven't had much losses like this today, and it's one of those tough games and it's a bad moment to have one of these bad losses, but it's baseball. And tomorrow we have to come back and be much better than we were today. It's unacceptable."

With the victory, Baltimore handed the worst-record-in-baseball distinction over to the Detroit Tigers.

Following Boston's weekend set with the Orioles, the Red Sox will face either the Yankees or Tampa Bay Rays during their next 14 games in a potentially season-defining stretch.
