Mets GM 'fully' expects Syndergaard, deGrom to stay on roster

With the trade deadline around the corner, teams might be lining up to acquire Noah Syndergaard's services, but the New York Mets seem to have other plans.

"I would fully expect (Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom) to be on our roster," Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen told reporters Friday, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

While deGrom signed a five-year extension earlier this year to remain with the Mets, Syndergaard is due to become a free agent following the 2021 season, and his name has come up in trade rumors as a result. The right-hander has reportedly been targeted by the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers, among others.

Van Wagenen met with reporters Friday prior to the Mets' first game after the All-Star break to discuss the state of the franchise. During the informal presser, the executive admitted he threw a chair during a meeting with coaches following the Mets' 7-2 loss to the Phillies on July 5. The first-year GM added that he's "not typically throwing furniture," according to Tim Healey of Newsday.

His team enters the second half of the season 10 games under .500 after an offseason in which Van Wagenen challenged the rest of the division to "come get us" and declared the Mets the favorites.

"They came and got us," Van Wagenen conceded Friday, according to Puma.

The Mets are currently 13 1/2 games back of the Atlanta Braves and seven games back of a wild-card spot, ahead of only the lowly Miami Marlins in the Senior Circuit.

Despite the team's struggles, Van Wagenen said he "absolutely" expects Mickey Callaway to remain the team's manager. In June, the Mets fined Callaway and pitcher Jason Vargas as punishment for getting into a clubhouse altercation with a reporter.
