Report: Gio Gonzalez plans to opt out of Yankees' minor-league deal

Left-handed starter Gio Gonzalez plans to opt out of his minor-league contract with the New York Yankees if he's not added to the major-league roster, sources tell Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

If he does opt out, the Yankees will have 48 hours to either add Gonzalez to their roster or grant his request for release, Feinsand adds.

He will hit the open market with new representation, too, after reportedly leaving agent Scott Boras in favor of CAA.

The southpaw may not have to look far to find a new home, either. The New York Mets are apparently more open to signing Gonzalez now that starter Jason Vargas has been struggling, according to Andy Martino of SNY.

Gonzalez, 33, spent 2018 between the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers. He went 10-11 with a 4.21 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 171 innings over 32 starts. He's made three starts in Triple-A for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with a 6.00 ERA over 15 innings.
