Mets' deGrom ties MLB record for consecutive quality starts

Jacob deGrom is going to run out of records to chase down if he continues to pitch like this.

The New York Mets right-hander made more history Wednesday when he tied Bob Gibson's MLB record of 26 consecutive quality starts, according to Tim Healey of Newsday. DeGrom could own the mark when the Minnesota Twins visit Queens next week.

The 30-year-old tied the record - set between 1967-68 - with a masterful performance against the Miami Marlins, as he recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts over seven shutout innings of three-hit baseball.

"I've been working on getting my arm up a little quicker," deGrom said, according to Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports. "I'm always working on mechanics and I felt really good throwing this past week."

DeGrom also hit a home run against the Marlins, becoming just the fifth pitcher since the mound was lowered in 1969 to strike out 14 batters and hit a homer in the same game, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

The reigning NL Cy Young winner also became the first pitcher in Mets history to have at least 10 strikeouts in his first two starts in a season, according to Ehalt.

Last week, deGrom set a new major-league record by allowing three runs or fewer in a 30th straight start during a win against the Washington Nationals.

The Mets ace - who signed a massive five-year extension at the end of March - hasn't allowed a run across 13 innings to begin the 2019 season. He's also collected 24 strikeouts and surrendered just two walks.
